Please add your thoughts

Next week, I'll be submitting a list of requested "upgrades" or changes to our Reference setting during this transition year. We've had weeks to live in this space. What needs changing?

I'll start the ball rolling; please use the comments facility to weigh in.

  • the desk needs a ledge for users to lean on while they work with us.

  • the desk might be modified in such a way that we would free accesss to the vents and achieve the objective of being less tucked away behind the pillars. This modification would improve visual access to Access as well and might be accomplished by removing the side panels on the desk. Or we might ask Paul to move the desk down. He would need to extend the wiring, however, or tape it down appropriately.

  • we need to remove the CPU from the sitdown station, perhaps repositioning in it a sling (as in the Larsen Room) beneath the desk. We will be more visible that way when we are using the sit down station.

  • we need to ask about the possibility of having the scanner and printers trade places. This is a service issue, since the printers are so high use.

I agree with all of the above. I am also concerned about signage. I'll make the new range guides as soon as Sue is finished shifting. I've also been putting fleas in various ears that we need to have copies of the revised stack guide posted throughout the building, not just on the reference pillar...

I would like a stable stool to sit on. The high chair makes me nervous.

I especially agree that we need a ledge on the front of the desk, and a more forward location for better visibility. Perhaps just removing the side panels could accomplish this while leaving the vent unblocked. I'm very glad to hear that Chris is asking for copies of the revised stack guide throughout the building -- having it only on the main floor doesn't make sense. And I agree that switching the printers and the scanner is a no-brainer; as long as we are still minding the printers and filling the paper trays, they need to be within sight. It would also be easier to point them out when patrons ask where they are.
