Desiderata: Home improvements for the Reference area

We should gather ideas on what we find irksome in our new digs. If it bugs you, it probably bugs everyone. Here are some ideas. If there is general agreement, maybe we could pursue. Feel free to add your own ideas and comments.

Raise the monitor two inches to clear the ledge or see if the replacement ledge can be slightly lower. Reason: Enable monitor to swing out better for patron viewing.

The sidewise set-up in the alcove students seem to prefer would be a great plus in the eastside alcoves. Can they be rotated too? Reason: Much easier to see at a glance if all terminals are in use. Currently you have to walk around to see if anyone is behind the wooden screen, or if it is logged in with stuff, indicating someone is off at the printer, etc.

We need a ruler at the desk.

Can we just lock up the handset at night and not the phone? Just as effective in preventing use.

Flip the cabinets around. Photocopier paper below. Newspaper backfile above. Reason: No heavy lifting when the six reams come in. Why lift and stack all that paper over your head when you could just shove it in the bottom. Jon says flipping doors not a problem.

These sound like good ideas to me, especially raising the computer monitor so that it clears the ledge better.

Chris, since you are usually the person who loads the paper into the cabinet, it should be kept in whatever part of the cabinet is easier for you. The newspapers would certainly be accessible in the top shelves.

I also like the idea of turning the computer tables in all the alcoves, if we can do it without damaging the wiring.

I brought in a ruler for the reference desk -- it's in the top drawer underneath the printer, next to our name plates.

Thanks for the good ideas, Chris.
Thanks for the ruler, Steve. BTW: aren't these sorts of things available in the supply closet on Level 4? If not, perhaps we should ask Lynn to have a couple of them on hand.

Chris -- since Jon doesn't see complications in switching the doors, let's pursue your idea. Steve is right: you're the one who unloads the paper and we can make that task easier.

The computer tables in the east alcove will be more of a challenge, because Paul will have to have his crew in to remove the privacy panels and the keyboard trays. Perhaps, though, we simply want to get rid of the privacy panels altogether? Even if we don't (or can't ) turn the tables, the panels are such an obstruction. The space will feel more open and perhaps "academic" without them.

Let's explore the possibilities and perhaps we can talk at lunch on Friday. Meantime, keep thinking about all the ways -- big and small -- we can be improving user space.

I too agree with Chris' comments. I am also wondering if Paul Bellenoit might have some other chair options for us? I find myself standing as much as sitting because I just can't seem to stop rolling out of position and just can't get comfortable. This is not so bad for a two hour shift, but longer (especially Sundays) it can wear on you.
