Sue didn't order this book, so somebody must have noticed its referencey quality and sent it our way.  It lists instances of mass hysteria, significant persons or organizations involved in mass hysteric stuff, and theories of mass hysteria.  However, its defination of mass hysteria is surprisingly broad; there are entries such as Oat Bran Craze, Miniature Golf Fad, Russian Sectarianism, Fashion, and Virtual Life.  I learned that oat bran doesn't really help lower my cholesterol any better than white bread--even though the nutritionist at UHS and a number of recent articles on PubMed say different!  Well, there is room for debate.  Many entries list numerous sources.

Words, words, words

An article from the July/August 2009 Humanities (the magazine of the NEH), recalls the importance (and reception) of a familiar friend:

Ain’t That the Truth. Webster’s Third: The Most Controversial Dictionary in the World

The story is probably familiar already to Chris, our in-house historian of lexicography, but may be interesting to those of us (including me) who are reading it for the first time. Enjoy!
